How the 2014 Federal Budget Affects Rail Passengers
From the National Association of Railroad Passengers
A $1.1 trillion House budget agreement will fund the government through September 2014, with spending cuts the dominant theme. Amtrak did receive $1.39 billion, a $46 million increase over 2013s budget. However, this increase is due to a $1.05 billion capital budget; Amtraks operating budget was actually reduced by $102 million (although there is an option to flex $40 million in capital over to operating if needed). Additionally, high speed rail funding was again zeroed out, and public transit received $10.7 billion (a $100 million reduction from the amount enacted in 2013). One bright spot was the intermodal Transportation Investments Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) grant program, which increased from $474 million to $600 million, a number that should benefit rail.
